Congratulating Donna Jones Alward on more than 25 weeks on the National Bestsellers Lists in Canada!

When The World Fell Silent by Donna Jones Alward is one of those reads that leave you thinking of its characters long after the book is closed! 5-stars- Amy McIsaac

The store owner, Amy McIsaac, received a morning text from her sister about the novel When The World Fell Silent that included statements like: “What a wonderful book,” “I am having a hard time putting it down,” “I love the storyline and the characters,” “It’s something to show us strength in people who have no reason to have any, except for pure respect for each other,” and “It’s a beautiful story on every page. Best book ever.” The text went on and on about this wonderful book and even included that she had her book propped up so that she could read and eat, too. All these positive remarks encouraged Amy to pick up the book and read it.

“Pardon Me,” I said to a cluster of ladies who were talking animatedly, “but what’s all the commotion this morning?” (page 71)

On the morning of December 6, 1917, as the First World War rages on in Europe, Nora Crowell and Charlotte Campbell go about their daily routines unaware of what lies ahead. These two women will be faced with unimaginable heartbreak and loss and must find the courage to go on. For Nora, it comes in the form of caring for others as a ‘Nursing Sister’, a ‘Bluebird’ (as they were colloquially known) in the Canadian Army, treating the wounded soldiers sent home from WWI. But her skills will surely be tested this morning.

“I couldn’t think about it now. If I did, I’d fall apart, and my job wasn’t to collapse. It was to work. To nurse. To treat the wounded. That was all-and it was everything.” (page 80)

For Charlotte Campbell it’s her daughter, Aileen. After her husband, Frank, is killed in the Battle of the Somme living with her in-laws was her best option. But life wasn’t easy with the Campbell’s.

“Hurry up with them dishes, girl. You’re slower than cold molasses.”
“Yes Mrs. Campbell” (pg.45)

Being treated like an indentured servant only urged Charlotte to get away from the house and take baby Aileen on their regular morning walks. But on this morning, a walk through downtown Halifax and around to Citadel Hill will change the lives of Charlotte, Aileen, and thousands more.

“Aileen grumbled, and I stopped for a moment to peek down into the carriage and offer a soothing reassurance…
I’d just straightened when the world fell silent, then a rumble shuddered beneath my feet and a terrible force pressed on my body, the blunt punch of it delivering me into darkness.” (pg.74)

A wonderful historical account of the Halifax Explosion. With real characters whose personal strengths and family relationships play out in the backdrop of tragedy.- Amy McIsaac

One of our loyal customers wrote this about When The World Fell Silent:

Couldn’t wait to read this book! In Halifax, the historical side of the Halifax Explosion of December 6th, 1917 is well known and has long been documented, but perhaps not so well known elsewhere. This book is the perfect story to share the factual events of that day with these readers. But beyond that, the charm of this story makes that day vividly personal through the lives of the main characters Nora and Charlotte. It’s a wonderful weave of heartbreaking moments of loss and tragedy, combined with many heartwarming twists and turns. When all wrapped up, this story gives us hope, reinforces the value of friendships, and proves beyond a doubt, the resilience of strong women. Absolutely loved it!!- Sylvia Mannette
